Do I need a dance background to take classes?
No! We encourage the non-dancer to explore your inner rock star and find the right class that fits your personality, lifestyle and fitness goals. Most classes are a combination of dance and fitness, which means they allow you to move and have fun, regardless of your fitness and dance ability. However, if you have a dance background (or did ‘back in the day’) you will find the classes challenging and fun and you’ll find that they’ll allow you to develop your dance artistry and style. Our fitness-style classes are set to high-energy music and are very rhythmic and ‘dance-like’ in format as well.
As a beginner, where should I start?
All classes at Street Studio are offered at a beginner or introductory level, and have more advanced levels to allow you to move up as your fitness and dance ability improves. In any class, there are always modifications that can be applied to most movements.
Intro to Dance Trance (DT) classes is often a great place to start in our dance-fitness program, as DT offers a full cross-section of dance styles all in one class. We spend time breaking down the steps so students can familiarize themselves with the dances, which will allow them to graduate to the faster paced dance and dance-fitness classes. All classes allow the student to move at their own pace or fitness level. We encourage you to push your fitness and dance ability to allow growth and improvement.
Feel free to call the studio with any questions about our classes, levels, teacher suggestions and more.
What should I wear?
We encourage you to FUNK it up at Street Studio! Wear the biggest, best and brightest colors that you dare to wear! We love layers, colors, street and dance style clothing in materials that are appropriate for movement and sweat. Your dance and fitness attitude has a lot to do with your clothing, so why not have some fun! Bellydance and Latin dancers can wear hip scarves, jewelry, make-up and whatever allows you to dance outside your comfort zone! Black dancewear is traditional and chic, but with a ripped up t-shirt and legwarmers, your will certainly unleash your inner Flashdancer, and will be ready to shake it like a maniac!
Most fitness classes require gear appropriate for working out. Shoes are very important and we recommend wearing cross-training shoes designed for lateral movement for Street Fight Club, Body Sculpt and fitness cardio classes. Dance classes like Dance Trance, Hip-hop and Latin Fusion are better performed in dance-style shoes such as Bloc, or flexible, lighter weight sneakers. Bellydance and yoga classes are best performed barefoot or with a light covering or slipper. Speak to your Street Instructor for any advice on clothing and shoes, accessories and other dancewear.
Can I try just one class, or are classes only available in a series?
We do offer series and workshops that will be continuous, but the majority of our classes are designed to take at any given time during the week or month. Unless a class specifies choreography or dance progression, a student can find the right class for them and jump right in!
Do you pay by the class or join with a membership?
At Street Studio, we are not a gym and therefore have no traditional membership or contract to sign. We do offer several price packages that are flexible, and are offered by the class, multiple class cards, monthly rates, and annual rates. Please see our pricing page or call the studio for details.
Where should I park?
We offer parking in the front parking lot, as well as plenty of parking in the back of the building and on the street. For evening classes, we suggest you park in the front parking lot as well as in the lots across the street.
Do you have a class and studio policy?
Yes. Because some classes will fill up quickly, we suggest you sign up for your favorite class online. We also encourage you to arrive early to find your spot on the floor. We suggest arriving to class at least 15 minutes early to stretch and talk to the teacher as needed. As a courtesy to other students, classes will be closed 15 minutes after the class starts.
Please keep all belongings in the dressing room areas or on the cubbies/shelves provided outside the classroom area. Please change into your dance and athletic shoes after arriving at the Studio and leave street shoes outside the dance floor area. We do not allow water bottles, street shoes, bags, etc in the dance rooms and on the dance floor area. This will clear the areas of clutter, and allow everyone to enjoy a neat and clean space to dance up storm!
Do I need to bring my own personal gear?
We suggest you bring your own towel, water bottle and appropriate gear for classes. Yoga mats and yoga gear will be available for sale and are not available to loan. Lighter weights will be made available for the body sculpt classes, however we highly recommend you bring any personal weights that may be more suitable to your needs. We can provide storage boxes for personal weights.
What’s different about your programs?
Almost everything! You’re not at the gym or a traditional dance studio. At Street Studio we’ve created a new brand of dance and fitness. You will find a variety of dance and fitness classes at different levels. Our programs are designed to make you sweat, be inspired, workout, meet friends, get in shape, and explore the world of dance in a completely new and exciting way. Our three studios are in an urban-style setting, with a booming sound system and graffiti art on the walls. The large studio has a lighting system similar to a dance club, which changes with the music, to bring a new experience to your dance and fitness classes.
Do you offer child care?
Yes! Please call the studio for more information.
Do you have a dressing room?
Yes. Our ladies dressing room with soon have several showers and will also have a make up area.
Are your classes co-ed?
Although most classes will appeal to women, the majority of our classes are designed for men as well. Men will find the yoga and fitness classes to be a challenging workout, and will also benefit from the cardio in our dance-fitness classes. However, we do offer ladies-only programs such as Bellydance and Bollywood, as well our Pole fitness classes, which will soon be made available.
I’m very self-conscious and shy, but want to give it a try. What do you suggest?
We can offer private and semi-private lessons for any reason, shy or not, or simply to spend one-on-one time with a teacher to learn a dance style. Small groups can be organized for private lessons as well. Private classes are priced per session, and are scheduled by appointment only.
Please call us at the studio at any time! We’ll be happy to answer your questions and welcome your comments.
